Alex Akuete: Bridging Art and Community

Alex Akuete is an artistic project director, visual artist, and an entrepreneur whose work inspires connection and revitalization across people of all ages and backgrounds. Based in Antwerp, Alex has made a significant impact in painting, design, installation art, performance, and community-building, often tackling pressing themes such as racial profiling and segregation. His versatility allows him to design and lead projects that resonate deeply with diverse audiences.

As a dancer and choreographer, Alex founded HIVE, a performance company dedicated to redefining the purpose and orientation of performance art. This endeavor reflects his commitment to pushing boundaries and creating transformative artistic experiences.

Alex is also the visionary behind Xray Community, a collective of over 150 young artists that serves as a platform for self-discovery, collaboration, and creative growth. This nurturing space empowers emerging artists to explore their passions while connecting with like-minded individuals. Additionally, Alex co-founded Wave Together alongside Sara Youkes and Bianca Quets Luzi. This initiative brings young people and organizations closer through carefully curated conversations that foster understanding and collaboration.

His academic journey led him to London's New Horizon Youth Centre in 2019, where he used art to support young people facing homelessness. This experience cemented his belief in art as a powerful tool for empowerment and connection. Since then, he has collaborated with cultural institutions both locally and internationally, designing and directing impactful projects such as Alter Ensor and REVERSE while mentoring countless young artists and helping them gain visibility within the art scene.

Currently, Alex holds the pioneering role of Youth Art Project Director and Community Builder at Antwerp's MOMU (the Fashion Museum of Antwerp) and Europalia. Through his work, he continues to explore the ever-evolving dynamics of interpersonal and societal relationships, using art as a medium for transformation and meaningful dialogue.
