Alter Ensor is a project developed in connection with Masquerade, Make-up & Ensor, the exhibition exploring professional and artistic make-up practices. In spring 2024, Creative Director Alex Akuete, in collaboration with MoMu, DE SINGEL, and Arenberg, invited young people aged 16–25 to submit their most creative make-up looks and reflect on their creative process through video.
On 19 August 2024, ten selected participants gathered at DE SINGEL to collaborate with renowned make-up artist Naomi Waku, creating new designs inspired by the work of James Ensor. The process and final results were documented and presented during a dedicated event at MoMu.
To further support emerging talent, influential figures from the fashion and make-up industries, including Inge Grognard, Bianca Quest Luzi, Stef Van Looveren, Karl Quiñonez Leon, and members of the Quatsch Collective, joined the project for conversations and networking sessions. Participants also shared their personal stories and experiences with make-up through organised interviews.
